The Importance of Celebrating your Strengths
Handstand has always been easy for me. I don’t say this from an ego stand point, but I am being honest. Since I was young I was always walking on my hands, flipping upside down. I’ve always had strong arms.
Its funny how we look at handstands and arm balances as these “advanced poses”
For me, handstand is not MY advanced pose. What scares me are forward folds, back bends, some poses that seem ‘basic’ and ‘beginner’.
I have tight hamstrings, and backbends don’t make me feel good. It’s just the way it is. But do I work on them occasionally? Of course. Because we need to train the body to ease into poses we don’t like.
I always tell my students, don’t worry about what the person beside you is doing. Whether they are upside down, doing the spits, taking wheel, whatever it is we all have our own individual strengths. Don’t beat yourself up for not being able to do a pose. One of my dream poses is to just forward fold! Thats it! If i could have open hamstrings i would be happy. But we have to celebrate our strengths. Stop focusing on what we CANT do and more on what we CAN. Embrace the journey no matter how long it takes you to get to your goals.
The day I forward fold or backbend will be a far bigger accomplishment for me than any handstand. So who cares what you are “bad at”. Let’s talk about what were good at. Let go of anything that does not serve you.
